Privacy policy

Learn Finnish helps adults practice Finnish vocabulary, grammar, review, and optional conversation practice (“Talk”).

Who we are. Learn Finnish is operated by Ammar (contact: ammar.ofc@gmail.com). This policy explains what data we collect, why, and how long we keep it.

Accounts. You may sign in with Apple or Google. We store an account identifier (provider + subject), an optional email if the sign-in provider shares it, and a session token generated by us so we can sync a minimal progress backup and authorize Talk features. Display name may be kept on your device for greetings.

Progress. Learning progress (for example learned words, current progress point, review counts, notes) is kept on your device first and may be synced to our servers so you can recover it if local data is lost. Progress backups are kept until you delete your account.

Talk and AI. When you use Talk or translation, your messages may be sent through our servers to OpenAI to generate a reply. We do not store Talk or translation message content on our servers — not during a session and not afterward. Content is held in memory only as needed to complete that request. Conversation history for the current Talk session stays on your device until you end the session.

OpenAI may process that content under its own policies. By default, OpenAI API abuse-monitoring systems may retain prompts and responses for a limited period (commonly up to 30 days). We do not use your Talk content to train our own models, and we do not sell your data or use it for advertising tracking. See OpenAI’s privacy materials: https://openai.com/policies/privacy-policy and https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/your-data.

Speech. For Talk, when you are signed in and cloud speech is enabled, text may be sent to Google Cloud Text-to-Speech to generate audio. If our servers or that provider are unavailable, the app falls back to your device’s built-in speech. Cached audio may be stored on your device to improve playback. Google states that Cloud Text-to-Speech does not log customer text or audio for that service: https://docs.cloud.google.com/text-to-speech/docs/data-logging.

Crash reporting. If you leave crash reporting on (default), the app may store error messages on your device and send them to our API about once an hour so we can fix bugs. Uploaded logs does not contain user data. You can turn this off in Settings. Talk chat text is not included. Logs are used only for debugging and is deleted periodically.

Children. The app is intended for adult self-learners. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

Third parties. We share data with service providers only as needed to run the features you use:

Those providers are expected to protect shared data with protections consistent with this policy and Apple’s App Store guidelines. Their own privacy policies also apply to data they process.

International processing. Our servers and these providers may process data in countries other than where you live (including the United States).

Retention.

Your choices and rights.

We do not sell personal information, do not use it for advertising tracking, and do not share it with data brokers.

Security. We use HTTPS for network traffic. Session tokens are stored in the device Keychain.

Deletion. You can delete your account from Settings in the app. That removes your server-side account and progress backup. On-device data may remain until you remove the app or clear local storage.
